Trying to find trends in a sea of links....

In order to try and discover what the current trends in education, technology, training and learning are I had to try and create a plan (as you can see by my previous post).  It took some time to figure out which tools/services that worked best for me and how to use them. I started with Google Alerts as it was something I was already using for other topics, created Alerts such as "Education", "Technology", "Technology Education", "Trends", "Training" and so forth. Once introduced to Google Reader I started to subscribe  to various blogs, online journals/digests, media websites, and such, as I came across interesting websites in my Google Alerts.  When trying to organize the articles I found that applied to what I'm trying to look for I started tagging and adding them to my Diigo account and to the umtrends11 Diigo group. It has been quite the experience trying to go through the vast amount of information that was coming to me all at once, but I think its all finally coming into place.

Some of the sites that I subscribe to are: EdTech Digest, the globe and mail, the New York Times, TechCrunch, MindShift, The eLearning Coach, Kineo, and so on.  After reading, adding, tagging and reviewing I've come up with a list of topics that I believe are current trends that have or will soon have an impact on education and training:
  1. Mobile devices (i.e. smartphones)
  2. eBooks
  3. Skype
  4. Social Learning (i.e. Facebook, Twitter)
  5. iPad/Tablets
  6. Game-based learning
  7. Gesture-based computing (i.e. Wii, MS Kinect)
  8. Video Technology (i.e. YouTube)
  9. Augmented Reality (i.e. Wikitude, StarWalk)
  10. Virtual Worlds
This is list is no particular order, as I'm still working on trying to determine which trends are more popular (or will become more popular), which of these trends will impact my life/profession the most and which trends I want to spend more time researching.
